The school has standardized on the Intel-Based MacBook, which can boot both Windows and Macintosh Operating systems. To eliminate unnecessary complications, it is suggested that you purchase the CESS computer package from the University's Computer Depot.
There are two primary advantages to purchasing a computer through the University's Microcomputer Services Depot. First, warranty service will be available on campus. Second, the software used by our University will be easily pre-loaded on your machine. The University has technology support in place that will attempt to help you install the recommended software regardless of where you purchase your machine and we will attempt to assist you when problems arise .
While the MacBook Air is a stunning ultraportable laptop computer, it does not offer the same level of productivity for our students. It requires the use of peripheral devices for CD/DVD use and has a significantly smaller hard drive as well as a slower video chipset (which will impact the creation of our students' video projects). If you are still interested in completing a custom order for the MacBook Air, please visit the Depot's custom quote area of their web site.
Having a laptop computer provides our students with constant access to their work. Students are able to bring their machine to classes held on-campus, in order to share their work, and get help from professors. While a desktop may provide students with the necessary software to complete their assignments, it doesn't allow for the increasing need to be part of a mobile learning environment.
The University has multiple options in place for obtaining technical support. Please refer to the Technical Assistance page in our web site to get phone numbers, availability, and locations.
Currently, the following programs will be recommending the acquisition of a laptop upon entering their program: Elementary Education, Middle Level Education, Secondary Education, Early Childhood Education, and Early Childhood Special Education. If you are not in these programs, it is still recommended that you use the CESS computer package from the Univeristy's Computer Depot.

It is recommended that you investigate insuring the computer against theft and accidental damage on your homeowner's insurance.
In the event a student’s computer is stolen, s/he should immediately contact the appropriate police department (campus or local police). They should then contact the university’s Computer Depot for assistance in filing a theft report needed to submit a claim to your homeowner's insurance company.
Please refer to the Technical Specifications section of this site for more information about cost.
Since your laptop is recommended by the College, students may choose to use an outside educational lender to help finance their laptop. This request is permitted once every 4 years. Please visit the UVM Financial Aid web site to obtain more information.
