Making a difference by supporting high-quality research and professional development in reading and literacy

The Vermont Reads Institute at the University of Vermont (VRI at UVM) conducts high- quality research and professional development in the area of reading and literacy. We are dedicated to helping students achieve the highest possible levels of competence in critical thinking and comprehension by enhancing teacher quality and supporting school change. With funding from private sources, foundations, and the Vermont Department of Education, VRI provides the knowledge and expertise on school improvement, teacher quality, and literacy achievement. We have the ability to work at all levels of the system – from work with individual students and teachers to whole-school reform. Functioning as an umbrella organization, VRI at UVM supports several existing projects:

  • Reading First
  • The Bridging Project
  • Vermont Adolescent Literacy & Learning Initiative (VALLI)
  • Literacy Leadership Initiative (LLI) Summer Institute

The ability to think critically about complex ideas and to respond insightfully and flexibly is essential for the success of students. The various activities of VRI at UVM are designed to help schools and educators meet and exceed those standards of instruction by:

  • offering on-site consultants and professional development
  • identifying critical areas of need and potential growth
  • using data-based decision making to create coherent and balanced literacy programs
  • designing professional development and supporting teachers in long-term sustainable school improvement
