Prospective Students

The University of Vermont IGERT bridges in-depth research in engineering, policy and behavior using complex systems theory as an integrating approach. All trainees in the program complete the Certificate of Graduate Study in Complex Systems at the University of Vermont, as well as specially designed courses in smart grid power networks, behavioral economics, policy systems, and research ethics. The IGERT program is conducted in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories and with a coalition of Vermont utility companies building the first state-wide smart grid in the nation. All trainees will complete a summer internship at Sandia and participate on field trips to different utility companies in the state. A complete summary of IGERT program components is available here.

Students interested in being considered for the IGERT program should complete the attached Application Form (in MS Word format). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but annual decisions for trainee selection are usually made in mid-March. Students may study in any of the following UVM PhD programs:

Civil and Environmental Engineering
Computer Science
Electrical Engineering
Experimental Psychology
Mathematical Sciences
Mechanical Engineering
Natural Resources
Neuroscience

A new PhD program in Policy is also under development and may be available soon.
