School of Engineering General Education Requirements

Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Computer Science & Information Systems students should refer to their curriculum checksheets for lists of approved general education courses – also known as Humanities & Social Science (HSS) electives – for those programs.

The School of Engineering (SoE) HSS requirement has been replaced with a new SoE General Education requirement that is consistent with University-wide General Education Requirements, as well as the vision and mission of the University and the program objectives of the Civil, Electrical, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering programs.

The new General Education (GenEd) requirement includes all former HSS courses, but allows many more options. Expanded options include Studio Art, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources, Business Administration and Public Health courses.

SOE General Education (GenEd):

  • University Diversity Requirement: one three-credit course from Category One (Race and Racism in the U.S.) and a second three-credit course from either Category One or Category Two (Human and Societal Diversity).
  • Nine additional credits of GenEd Electives chosen from the courses listed below:
