Unit 4: Characteristics of Children
and Youth with Various Disabilities

This unit will provide an overview of how certain characteristics of children and youth with disabilities may affect their learning and school inclusion. It will provide information and activities to assist paraeducators to facilitate instruction and create positive, inclusive classrooms for students with disabilities and their peers.

After completing Unit 4, participants will know:

  • how all children and youth are a) like all other children, b) like some other children, and c) like no other children,
  • the common characteristics of children and youth with a) autism, b) deaf-blindness, c) deafness, d) emotional disturbance, e) hearing impairment, f) mental retardation, g) multiple disabilities, and other disabilities,
  • how some disability characteristics may affect learning and inclusion of students with disabilities.
