Harper, V. (1994). Multicultural perspectives in the classroom: Professional preparation for educational paraprofessionals. Action in Teacher Education, XVI(3), 66-78.
The value of multicultural perspectives in classrooms are described in terms of students with diverse cultural and racial backgrounds, and the need for both certified teachers and paraprofessionals with diverse cultural and racial backgrounds. Paraprofessionals often represent a strong connection for schools and communities, particularly in the areas of language and culture. Following a review of the historical development of paraprofessionals in education, the author raises concern for practices where paraprofessionals are often providing unsupervised instruction to students with the most needs. Efforts to create career ladders for paraprofessionals with diverse cultural and racial backgrounds are provided. Examples of model programs which recruit and support paraprofessionals from a variety of ethnic and racial are described. Components of successful programs are identified and discussed.
