Summary Statement:

This manual is organized into two parts. The first part addresses the roles of paraprofessionals in effective schools by discussing historical developments, current figures on the numbers of paraprofessionals in schools, credentialing of paraprofessionals, and elements of good paraprofessional practice. The second part of this manual describes fifteen programs that were selected because of their innovative use of paraprofessionals and research-based practices. These program profiles describe the work of paraprofessionals and programs that offer work-related opportunities for paraprofessionals to seek teacher certification. In addition to a table summarizing programs, all profiles discuss: (a) a description of their community and educational setting; (b) major program features; (c) support for implementation; and (d) evidence of success. Appendices include paraprofessional job titles and descriptions, contact information for programs described, and federal student aid programs.
