Concentration News

September 2, 2008 - BEST Graduate Concentration Integration with Positive Behavior Supports (PBS)

With the increasing number of schools adopting Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS: http://www.pbsvermont.org/ ) we are seeking ways to integrate our curriculum with this initiative. What this means for this year, is that we will not be offering any of our core courses this fall because we'll be focused on curriculum development.

We're in the planning stages for what we'll offer in the spring. Here's what we're currently thinking:

  • Perhaps another opportunity to take Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI)
  • EDSP 307 - Prevention, Teaching, and Responding Strategies for Students with EBD
  • Course(s) specifically for personnel at schools adopting PBS
  • Next summer, if you're attending the BEST Summer Institute with your school team, you can take the BEST Summer Institute graduate course as well.

If you're interested in any of the possibilities I've outline here I encourage you to contact me to let me know (this will help me decide what courses to offer and where). Also, if you were hoping to take courses that we don't plan to offer this year (EDSP 305 - Interagency Collaboration; EDSP 306 - EBD Assessment), please let me know that as well.Ê

May 28, 2008 - Summer 2008 Course Cancelled

We have cancelled our summer course, EDSP 305: Interagency Collaboration and Resource Development, due to low enrollment. We will begin planning for our Fall course right away and post updates here. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

March 23, 2008 - Summer 2008 Course Announced

EDSP 305: Interagency Collaboration and Resource Development (3 credits)

Where: BEST Summer Institute, Killington Grand Resort, Killington, VT

When: Five full days - June 22-26, 2008

Instructor: Jesse Suter

Description: The course addresses interagency and family supports and planning strategies for meeting the needs of students with emotional and behavioral challenges. Participants will explore collaborative teaming strategies, the Vermont system of care, collaboration with families, lead agencies for children and families, and the Department of Education and Agency of Human Services Interagency Agreement and Act 264 coordinated service planning process (http://vtcsp.blogspot.com).

EDSP 305 takes place over five full days during the BEST Summer Institute, from Sunday 6/22 to Thursday 6/26. This provides an exciting opportunity to participate in keynotes and a workshop at the institute, make contacts with other educators around the state, and finish the majority of class in a single week. Part of the course involves working with school teams at the institute and providing other assistance with the conference. In exchange, the conference registration fee is waived, and participants receive housing and breakfast and lunch each day.

**Please note: This is NOT the same course as "EDSP 295: BEST Graduate Course" which is on the BEST Summer Institute website.**

EDSP 307: Prevention and Teaching Strategies for Students with Emotional and Behavioral Challenges
Where: White River Junction / Springfield region (specific location TBD)
When: Course will be offered on weekends possibly with a few evening classes between April and June 2008 (specific dates/times TBD)

This course covers effective prevention and intervention strategies for students with (or at-risk for) emotional and behavioral disabilities. It covers such topics as classroom management, social skills training, anger management, crisis intervention, problem solving, and communication strategies. A primary goal is to help students develop methods for preventing and intervening with emotional and behavior challenges at the individual, classroom (or small group), and school-wide levels. This course is particularly well suited for educators adopting Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) or other school initiatives emphasizing prevention and reduction of behavioral challenges.

October 8, 2007 - Concentration highlighted in TASH Connections

An article on the graduate concentration was published in the January/Februray issue of TASH Connections, and has now been posted on our website by permission of the publisher. The article, written by Julie Welkowitz and Ruth Hamilton (both pioneering coordinators and faculty for the concentration), gives an excellent history of the concentration and how it was developed to meet the needs of students with emotional and behavioral disabilities in Vermont.

The full reference and a link to the article can be found here: Click here to read the article from TASH Connections

August 8, 2007 - Dates posted for Fall 2007 Course

This course provides an overview of emotional and behavioral disorders with an emphasis on the diagnosis, eligibility, types of assessment, and functional behavioral assessment (FBA).

Dates: 6 Saturdays: 9/15, 10/6, 10/20, 11/3, 11/17, 12/8

Times: 8-4

Location: Because approximately 2/3 of students are in the SE and 1/3 are in the NW I would like to hold 4 of the 6 classes in the SE and the remaining 2 in the NW. This will allow us to more fairly distribute travel. I am currently trying to reserve classrooms at UVM (Burlington) for 10/6 & 11/3. The other dates will be in the SE (Chester / Cavendish area) with the specific location TBD.

Costs: Current Vermont Higher Education Collaborative rate of $730, due at the first day of the course

Information on the instructor and required texts coming soon!

July 1, 2007 - Cohort Continues Fall 2007

This Fall, the BEST Graduate Concentration will offer the second course in its core program EDSP 306: Issues and Approaches to Assessment of Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities. This course can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of the full 9-credit concentration. The course will be offered over the course of the fall semester (September to December) in 5 to 6 full-day Saturdays. The exact dates and locations will be announced by the end of July.

May 1, 2007 - Cohort Begins at BEST Summer Institute

The 2007 Cohort will begin with EDSP 305 at the BEST Summer Institute at the Killington Grad Resort & Hotel. in Killington, VT. The course will take place over five full-days at the institute (approximately 8:00AM-5:00PM) from Sunday, June 24 to Thursday, June 28. Participants will attend many of the institute events (e.g., keynotes, workshops) and work with school teams from other schools during the week. Course fees are $700 (due at the first day of class). As a special bonus, tuition for the first course includes participation at this year's BEST Summer Institute (including room and board).

The 2007 Cohort will continue with EDSP 306 in the fall and finish with EDSP 307 in the spring. Currently there is sufficient enrollment to offer these courses in southeastern Vermont with class meetings held on Saturdays. With sufficient enrollment in another region another cohort could be started, so please contact me if your are interested in participating in another region. Opportunities also exist for educators from a school or district to participate as teams.
