New Literacy Website for Children with Combined Vision and Hearing Loss

The New "All Children Can Read" website provides resources to promote literacy for children with combined vision and hearing loss. The development of the new website began in 2006 as part of the work of the National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness Literacy Practice Partnership. This group envisioned the creation of a central location to provide information and resources to individual state deaf-blind projects, teachers, family members and related service providers interested in beginning or enhancing literacy instruction for children who have combined vision and hearing loss and children with other complex learning challenges. The site provides strategies to help guide instructional planning in a user-friendly, interactive manner.

A Shift in Perpective

Literacy has commonly been defined as the ability to read and write. However, that definition has placed literacy beyond the scope of possibility for some children who have complex sensory, physical or developmental challenges. More recent work in the field of literacy has acknowledged the broader contexts in which literacy takes place and recognized literacy as a right for all individuals. This shift in perspective validates the role literacy plays in enhancing the quality of life for every learner. Literacy expands communication and understanding related to self-help, expressing an interest or participating more fully in the community. Regardless of age or ability, acquiring literacy skills is a question of “how” rather than “if” or “when.”
