On August 15, 2011, State Board Rule 4500, The Use of Restraint and Seclusion in Vermont Schools, took effect.   Among its features, Rule 4500 requires training for staff participating in the restraint of students.  Crisis Prevention InstituteŐs Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training program is among a list of programs on the CommissionerŐs recommended list of programs teaching the appropriate use of restraint.  Therefore successful participation in this training will meet the training requirement of Rule 4500.

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) is a safe, non-harmful behavior management system designed to help human service workers provide for the best possible care, welfare and safety of children who become out-of-control or physically aggression. CPI teaches nonverbal and verbal strategies to prevent and de-escalate verbal acting-out behaviors, personal safety techniques to avoid client and staff injury, therapeutic physical intervention techniques using a team approach in physical control and restraint, and strategies in therapeutic post-vention. Completion of the 8-hour training leads to CPI certification.

If you have already completed CPI training within the last 18 months, there is a 3 hour CPI Refresher to review CPI principles and strategies as well as opportunities for practice and problem solving. Completion of this training will result in re-certification.

All participants should wear comfortable clothing and soft soled shoes. While it is not required for registration, it is recommended that participants attend in teams. If you have any questions about registration, please call Anne Dubie at (802) 656-5775.
