Session Description: Our students with complex needs create challenging dilemmas for educators who want to ensure appropriate instruction that is connected to the general education curriculum. These students usually have limited literacy experiences, which has a significant impact on their literacy abilities as well as their world knowledge. They often use augmentative communication supports, another piece that requires instruction and thoughtful integration. How, then, can we provide comprehensive literacy instruction that is connected to the general education curriculum yet also provides learning opportunities that match the students’ needs? In this interactive session, educators will learn how to anchor instruction in language and concept development and apply predictable and meaningful instructional strategies. We will focus on the elements of comprehensive literacy program and how to support emergent readers and writers of all ages. Lastly, we will share examples and discuss harnessing the general education curriculum as a rich source of interest and variety.

About our Speaker: Erin Sheldon earned her graduate degree studying the special education needs of students with Angelman syndrome. She is particularly interested in the teaching practices that foster language development and access to the regular curriculum. Erin is the CEO of Integration Action for Inclusion, Ontario’s school inclusion parent advocacy organization. She serves on the Communication Advisory Panel of the Angelman Syndrome Foundation (ASF) and led the ASF’s year-long communication and literacy webinar series for educators, SLPs, and parents. Erin has authored book chapters, journal articles, and resource manuals for educators. She presents internationally on topics of assistive technology, school inclusion, and language development. She lives in Kingston, Ontario, Canada with her family, including her teenage daughter, Maggie, who has Angelman syndrome.
