CDCI Assistant Director Accepted into Leadership Institute for Cultural Diversity and Cultural and Linguistic Competency

Darren McIntyre, Vermont I-Team Director and CDCI Assistant Director attended the Leadership Institute for Cultural Diversity and Cultural and Linguistic Competence held in Santa Fe, New Mexico in June of 2017. The goal of this Leadership Institute is to increase the capacity and number of leaders to advance Cultural and Linguistic Competency and the cultural diversity among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities within the United States. 

The Leadership Institute is hosted by the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development’s National Center for Cultural Competence. The Georgetown University Leadership Academy is well known for its leadership curriculum in Cultural and Linguistic Competency. This Leadership Institute is working to adapt Georgetown's model to the context of working with people within the intellectual and developmental disability network. Through its efforts, organizations who provide services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are better connected, enhancing their capacity for Cultural and Linguistic Competency.

McIntyre has been at the forefront of growth in Cultural and Linguistic Competency during his time at CDCI. Prior to attending this Leadership Institute, Darren helped forged CDCI’s Strategic Plan for Building Cultural and Linguistic Competence. Since the inception of this plan, McIntyre has orchestrated trainings for members of the I-Team, the Vermont Assistive Technology Tryout Centers, and CDCI faculty and staff on using cultural brokers and interpreters while providing services to individuals with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, especially New Americans. McIntyre has established a relationship with Association of Africans Living in Vermont (AALV), which provides many services, including cultural brokering and interpreters, to New Americans from all over the world.

This year McIntyre also recieved one of two College of Education and Social Services' "Making A Difference" Staff Award. CDCI congratulates Darren on his continued hard work and leadership in this important area. We are grateful to be making a difference for all Vermonters with disabilities.
