Disaster Resilience for Mobile Home Parks
Funded by the USDA's Disaster Resilience for Rural Communities Program, this three-year project directed by Dr. Baker will investigate the vulnerabilities of Vermont's mobile home parks to disasters and hazards and develop strategies for increasing the resilience of these unique communities. In collaboration with the Mobile Home Project at the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity, this project will engage a variety of stakeholders, including park residents and park owners, in these efforts.
The 2011 flooding events, specifically the Memorial Day floods and Tropical Storm Irene, have highlighted the importance of this work. In response to questions raised about the flooding hazards of mobile home parks, we have prepared a draft research article that details finding from rapid GIS assessment of the 248 mobile home parks in Vermont.
Stay tuned for more updates and upcoming events related to this grant.
