| About CDAE's Public Communication Major
Majors in Public Communication at the University of Vermont use an integrated approach to communication in the public interest to critically analyze situations, manage information, and craft messages that work in an increasingly global society.
CDAE’s approach to public communication is grounded in a tradition of applied education, research, and outreach. Students in this major are provided with a foundation in public communication theory, writing and visual design, research, technology, and strategic planning. Courses give students hands-on experience from day one. Whether analyzing case studies, writing press releases, designing visual components, or employing research methods, Public Communication students are given the opportunity to graduate with a competitive portfolio of work that allows them to jump right into the field.
Graduates of the PCOM major will be prepared to work in diverse fields and in a range of organizations. A sampling of these includes marketing or public relations firms, NGOs, small businesses, and non-profits. CDAE provides the foundation that allows students to explore several career tracks that may include pursuing graduate degrees or applying their knowledge and skills to positions such as communication planner, information specialist, publicist, event planner, market researcher, or communication coordinator. Individual interests are reflected in choices for minors, elective classes, service learning opportunities, and internships.
The CDAE department offers a unique and advantageous context for pursuing a Public Communication degree. Students are given the opportunity to incorporate knowledge and practice in community development, teamwork, leadership and management, public service, and environmental responsibility into a valuable framework for professional practice.
