In response to information on water quality gathered by water monitoring groups, as well as a detailed needs assessment survey, a continuing series of projects have been undertaken to improve water quality in the communities of Las Flores and Jaitique.  A slow sand filter was designed by Scott Hamshaw, then a UVM engineering student, and was constructed by members of the community.  Two years later another engineering student, current CDAE graduate student Nicole Mason, designed a sedimentation basin in response to suggestions from the local water board. (See the article Steady Flow from UVM's newspaper The View) The existing pipe network, infrastructure, and watershed are currently being assessed, which will lead to further water system and watershed management projects.
