Honduras Classwork

To prepare for the fieldwork portion of the class, students enroll in CDAE 195 'Preparation for Field Work in International Agriculture and Rural Development: Honduras' with permission from the instructor, Dr. Dan Baker. This course provides an introduction to international project planning and development in rural areas, with focuses on promoting cultural awareness, preparing students for field conditions, and offering students opportunities to exchange ideas and improve professional community development skills.

The coursework consists of three main components:

     - Seminars - Students must attend all of the weekly seminars, and are expected to participate.  They will be taugh by the course instructors and guest speakers, over a range of topics including rural develoment, project planning, appropriate technologies, travel experiences, and health and safety.

     - Service Learning - This class has been designated as a Service-Learning course from the Office of Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning (CUPS).  As part of the group service-learning projects, students are expected to complete several critical reflection assignments at various stages of the project experience.

     - Assignments -  Students are expected to complete a variety of readings to prepare them for their field projects.  The major assignment that individuals and groups must complete involves research, documentation, planning, implementation, and a final written report discussing the project which they begin on-campus and complete in Honduras after fieldwork.

Spanish skills are desirable but not required. Traveler's Spanish is taught by experienced TAs and the co-instructor, Dave Chappelle. Translators will always be present in Honduras when necessary.

Health and travel safety are extensively discussed to ensure the most positive, comfortable trip experience as possible.
