Jonathan Leonard was born and grew up on Long Island, New York. He attended public High School and went to Drew University, graduating with a BA in Zoology in 1978. During the next two years he worked in alpine huts along the Appalachian trail for the Appalachian Mountain Club, and worked in the Planetarium at the Worcester Science Center in Worcester Massachusetts. In 1980 Jonathan arrived at UVM at the end of a bicycle trip from San Francisco to Alaska and across Canada, to begin a Masters degree in Zoology. In 1984 he was hired as the coordinator of the first computer teaching laboratory on UVM campus. Since he has developed and taught the College of Agriculture's Computer Application course. Jonathan earned a Ph.D. in Plant and Soil Science (specializing in Entomology) at UVM in 1993. He is the recipient of the University's Kroepsch-Maurice Award for Excellence in Teaching (1991), the Faculty Senate's Faculty Recognition Award in 1999 and the Joseph E. Carrigan Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching and Advising (2006). He lives with his wife and daughter in Richmond, Vermont.

Bio/Interests:

Human Sustainable Societies. Interested in the interactions between human impacts, population growth, consumption, and technology. Exploring economic, social, and environmental strategies for achieving a sustainable society. Currently gathering data on global human impacts for future systems analysis with computer models. Invertebrate Conservation Biology. Interested in species diversity, especially of insects. Study the ecology of isolated populations of endangered tiger beetles (Cicindela spp., Coleoptera: Carabidae) of the Northeast. Collect data on species diversity of ground beetles (Carabidae) and habitat specialization. Interested in geographic information system (GIS) techniques of locating critical habitats. Synchronization of insect population life cycles. Collect data on periodical behavior of the conifer swift moth Korscheltellus gracilis (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae). Interested in Vermont species diversity, running speed (tempo), foraging efficiency and slavery in ant colonies. Jonathan plays several musical instruments, and one of his ambitions (however illusory) is to become the world's best bluegrass guitarist. He is currently teaching five courses.
