Matthew was born and raised in Fresno, Ca, a large agricultural city in central California. Matthew earned an BS in Ecology from UC Davis. While at school he studied abroad in Kenya focusing on Ecology and Human/Wildlife conflict issues. Matthew spent two years prior to starting at UVM with the Peace Corps in Romania working with a dairy modernization program for central Romania. During his time in Romania he worked on Farmer Education programs, modernization of a model dairy, and community development.
