Originally from the coastal community of Matunuck, Rhode Island, Kelly graduated from St. Michael's College with a double major in Anthropology/Sociology and Spanish. Her interests in development began while studying abroad in Ecuador through the School for International Training. Following graduation, she worked for the Public Interest Research Group as a college organizer encouraging civic engagement among young adults. She then served as a Peace Corps volunteer with a focus on food security in a Mayan community located in the western highlands of Guatemala. Soon after returning, Kelly left for Panama where she worked for Peace Corps Response. She partnered with a governmental organization and helped design and carry out trainings focused on sustainable agriculture while providing technical and managerial support at a didactical farm.
