Chinese/Vietnamese New Year - Year of the Rooster

Dr. Quang Phu Van will give an introduction to Vietnamese culture and values. Special attention will be given to notions of cultural identity and menaing of life, grounding in the history of war, migration and its contemporary manifestations within the context of the USA and its values as they relate to the New Year and in comparison to dominant U.S. culture.

"History of Laws Banning Interracial Marriage in the US".

Local Vermont author, Phyl Newbeck will discuss the history of laws banning interracial marriage in the US. She will explore the case of Loving v. Virginia, the 1967 case in which the Supreme Court ruled that laws barring interracial marriage were unconstitutional.

Wolfgang Mieder is a world leader in the study of proverbs, sayings and international folklore. Two of his many books, "Call a Spade a Spade": From Classical Phrase to Racial Slur. A Case Study (2002) and "No Struggle, No Progress": Frederick Douglass and His Proverbial Rhetoric for Civil Rights (2001). are the basis for this lively presentation.
