Many people today do not understand the phrase, “Zoot Suit Riot.”  This documentary explores the racial tensions between Anglos and Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, CA in the 1940’s, the riots, the controversial trial that followed and the community response to exonerate the convicted.

Two films: True Colors and Not in Our Town.  These two films address both overt and covert issues of racism and discrimination within the U.S., and depict a variety of responses.  The discussion portion of this program will focus on appropriate responses within our context.

PBS documentary that explores issues of faculty diversity in American higher education in the mid-1990s, focusing on the experiences of eight minority scholars in the humanities and social sciences at a wide range of institutions.

Wrestling with Manhood

Wrestling with Manhood is the first educational program to pay attention to the enormous popularity of professional wrestling among male youth, addressing its relationship to real-life violence and probing the social values that sustain it as a powerful cultural force.

An Indian woman looks at her life, her marriage, and her role in contemporary society in both India and the United States.

 

Osama

An Afghan girl and her mother lose their jobs when the Taliban closes the hospital where they work.  With all the men in the family killed in battle, there is no one left to support the family.  Feeling they no choice, the mother disguises her daughter as a boy.  As ‘Osama’ the girl embarks on a terrifying journey as she tries to keep the Taliban from finding out her true identity.  Inspired by a true story, Osama is the first entirely Afghan film shot since the fall of the Taliban.

In 1939, Germany declared war on freedom, demanding conformity from its youth.  A group calling themselves “Swing Kids” used rebellious “swing” music from America to display their dissent and defy the Nazis.
