Transfer Credit Policies & Procedures

What will transfer?

To get a sense of how classes transfer, please consult the transfer credit guide.

The Office of Transfer Affairs will determine which courses transfer from your previous institutions. Transfer Affairs determines the amount of credit granted based on the official transcript and calculated semester hours. To convert quarter hours to semester hours, multiply by 2/3 (4.5 quarter hours equals 3 semester hours). More information . .

Keep in mind, however, that though your courses may transfer, they may not satisfy particular Arts & Sciences degree requirements.Once Transfer Affairs has evaluated your transcript they will be able to access your Transfer Equivalency Worksheet online off the Registrar's page.

How will my transfer credit fit into the Arts & Sciences Curriculum?

Applying transfer credit to the curriculum can be confusing, but the Dean's Office advisors are available to help students through this process. In order to graduate, a student must complete 122 credits including major, minor, and distribution requirements. Transfer credit may fulfill all requirements. The limit to using transfer credit is that ½ of the major and ½ of the minor must be done at UVM. Additionally, 30 credits out of a student's last 45 credits must be completed at UVM.

Fulfilling Distribution and General Requirements with Transfer Credit Only

3 credit courses can fulfill distribution requirements, in some cases a 4 credit course is required. In the case where a class transfers as a fraction, 2.5 credits or higher can fulfill a distribution requirement that requires a 3 credit course.

Applying transfer credit to A&S general distribution requirements.
General Requirements:

The Non-European Cultures and the Race Relations and Ethnicity Requirements can only be fulfilled by specific classes. If one of your classes transferred in as an exact match it will automatically fulfill the requirement. Often times transfer credit comes in as XX, or 1XX . If you have taken a course that matches a description for one of the course listed, you can bring a syllabus in for Transfer Affairs to review. If you have received transfer credit for a class you believe would fulfill one of these requirements email the Dean's office and they can put you in contact with a faculty member who can review you syllabus.

Distribution Requirements:

When looking at the distribution requirements you will notice that some the distribution requirements only require that you take a course in a certain area. For example, the Fine Arts requirement can be fulfilled by any three credit Art History, Film, Studio Art, Music or Theatre course. If your credit transferred as ART XX 3 credits or ART XXX 3 credits it would fulfill the requirement. On the other hand, only courses at the 52 level or higher can fulfill the Foreign Language requirement. In the case where your Spanish class transferred as 1XX transfer affairs has indicated that while it does not transfer as an exact class, it is at or above the 100 level. Therefore the 1XX course would fulfill your requirement. On the other hand, if a Spanish class transfers in as SPAN XX course, there is not enough information here to determine if the class is at the level of 52 or higher. In this case, you can bring a syllabus in and Transfer Affairs will send it to the Spanish department for review. Major/Minor Requirements Transfer credit will be approved by Transfer Affairs but will not always be assigned an exact UVM course equivalent [these courses are designated ANTH OXX?]. If a student would like to have such credit apply toward a major or minor requirement, the Dean's Office must receive written approval from the appropriate department. In some departments, an exact equivalency is not necessary but rather a category or subfield distinction is acceptable.

Once I'm matriculated at UVM, can I take classes at another institution?

If you plan to take courses at another institution after you have entered UVM (e.g., summer courses, study abroad), get approval for these courses before you take them. The Office of Transfer Affairs has a form that, upon completion, guarantees transfer credit if you finish the course satisfactorily. Getting prior approval will eliminate any problems that might occur about the transfer of credit. If you take a course without prior authorization, saving the course syllabus, notes, papers and exams will be essential in gaining transfer approval.
