Internship at the House of Commons, London, UK

2010-11 PARLIAMENTARY TERM

The College of Arts and Sciences will co-sponsor a student to work in the British House of Commons for the parliamentary year, October 2010 to July 2011. Applicants must be full-time sophomore students in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The UVM intern will work in the office of the Honorable Christine Russell (Labor -- Chester), Member of Parliament, assisting her in running her office, and with various parliamentary tasks in Westminster and in her constituency. Duties consist principally of correspondence with constituents, research, keeping Mrs. Russell’s schedule, and other such administrative activities.

The internship requires a ten-month residency in London; the student chosen must take a leave of absence from UVM for the 2010-11 academic year. The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will provide an $8,000 stipend, and this will be matched with a stipend of approximately $10,000 from Mrs. Russell’s office. All arrangements and costs for travel (including passport, visa, etc.) to/from London, and for housing, meals, transportation, insurance, and any other expenses incurred while living in London are the responsibility of the student. The student must also get security clearance to work in the House of Commons.
