Students have several choices for gateway courses into a major or minor in music:
MU 109/054 Harmony and Form I, with Lab
This is the first semester of a four-semester sequence for students accepted into the music major. Study through writing and analysis of diatonic harmony, melodic elaboration and chromatic inflection, two and three part forms, and variation procedures. With accompanying lab. Offered only in the fall.
MU 110/056 Harmony and Form II, with Lab
This is the second semester of a four-semester sequence for students accepted into the music major. Study of chromatic harmony, sequence, applied seventh chords, and variation, sonata, and rondo forms. With accompanying lab. Offered only in the spring.
MU 001 Introduction to Classical Music
A survey of musical styles from Medieval Gregorian chant to the
present. No prerequisite. May not be counted toward the major. Three
credits.MU 005 Introduction to Jazz History
Survey of jazz from its roots in ragtime and blues of the late
nineteenth century to contemporary styles. Prerequisite: Ability to
read music, or permission of instructor. Three credits.MU 006 American Music
Survey of American music from the Pilgrims to the present. Folk,
popular, and classical music. Vernacular and cultivated traditions. No
prerequisite. Three credits.
Students interested in Music as a major or minor are encouraged to participate in performing ensembles (by audition). Ensembles include: Concert Band, Vermont Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, University Concert Choir, Catamount Singers, Jazz Vocal Ensemble, University Jazz Ensemble, Latin Jazz Ensemble, and several Jazz Combos. Students are also encouraged to register for private lessons. See the Department website for more information.
