Gateway/Entry-Point Courses into Japanese Major/Minor

First-year students who have taken JAPN 001/051 in their first semester should take JAPN 002/052 in their second semester:

JAPN 002 Elementary Japanese

Offered in the spring only.

JAPN 052 Intermediate Japanese

Offered in the spring only.

Note:  First-year students who studied Japanese in high school but have not taken JAPN 001/051 in the first semester (i.e., the fall semester) at UVM should contact the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures to arrange for a time to take a placement test at the end of the fall semester and enroll in the recommended language course for the spring semester.

While continuing to take Japanese language courses, students should consider taking lower-division courses significantly related to Japan:

HST 050 China & Japan to 1800

Historical development of the politics, economics, social structure, philosophy, religion, and the arts in East Asia from Neolithic times to 1800 (for students concentrating on East Asia). Offered in the fall.

HST 051 China & Japan since 1800

Continuity and change in the politics, economics, society, and culture of China and Japan in the 19th and 20th centuries (East Asia).  Offered in the spring.

REL 021 Intro Rel: Asian Traditions

Study of the Hindu, Buddhist, and East Asian religious traditions as expressed in their basic symbolisms, writings, practices, and cultural forms. Offered in the spring and the fall.
