Academic Introduction to the Major (AIM)

Global and Regional Studies

Gateway/Entry-Point Courses into Global and Regional Studies Major/Minor

The Global and Regional Studies Program (GRS) is an interdisciplinary program, whose curriculum largely derives as cross-listed courses from other academic departments in the College of Arts & Sciences (Anthropology, Art History, Chinese, Classics, Economics, English, French, Geography, German, History, Italian, Japanese, Political Science, Religion, Russian, Sociology, Spanish) as well in the Business School, the School of Natural Resources, and the CDAE Program.

Students are best advised, therefore, to consult the on-line schedule of courses to enroll in an introductory level course in any of the above-mentioned departments. In particular, the 002 (second-semester, beginning-level) and 052 (second-semester, intermediate-level) courses in any of the foreign languages listed above provide a very good entry-level experience for studying in the Global and Regional Studies Program.

Similarly, for purposes of an AIM experience in the Global and Regional Studies Program, we can recommend the following courses in other departments:

ANTH 021 Human Cultures
EC 011 Principles of Macroeconomics
EC 012 Principles of Microeconomics
GEOG 001 World Regional Geography
POLS 051 Introduction to International Relations
POLS 071 Comparative Political Systems

or any of the non-U.S. History courses listed at below the 100-level, including:

History 009 Global History to 1500
History 010 Global History Since 1500
History 023 Birth of Europe
