Communication Sciences

Gateway/Entry-Point Courses into Communication Sciences Major/Minor

The following two courses provide a useful introduction to the major:

CMSI 080 Introduction to Linguistics

Introduction to biological, cognitive, and cultural bases of human communication through language, and to modern linguistic theory. Assignments provide opportunities for critical thinking and writing.

CMSI 094 Development of Spoken Language

Familiarizes students with the nature of the development of language with an emphasis on typical development. The acquisition of speech and language will be interpreted in light of current learning and cognitive theories and methods of linguistic analysis. Students also gain an understanding of cross-cultural language socialization practices related to joint attention and conversation.

Additionally, the following are useful for aspiring Communication Sciences Majors/Minors.

PSYC 001 General Psychology

Introduction to the entire field, emphasizing the behavior of the normal adult human being.

BIOL 004 The Human Body

Introduction to basic human anatomy and organ system physiology emphasizing normal homeostatic mechanisms and the changes that accompany common disorders and diseases.
