The College of Arts and Sciences is the heart of the University of Vermont in many respects: it is the largest of UVM's schools and colleges and has the largest number of students, faculty and staff; it also offers the bulk of those foundational courses that ensure that students all over campus have the tools to succeed in their more advanced and specialized academic endeavors; finally, it makes available a broad array of disciplinary and interdisciplinary specialties within the arts, the humanities, the natural sciences and the social sciences. Although it is an important goal of the College to produce graduates who have specific skills, knowledge and training that will serve them well as they enter the workforce in the United States or abroad or continue their educations, it is the principal goal of the College to assure that its graduates are learned citizens of a global community, able to think critically and historically about personal, local, national and world challenges and take informed, ethical, and, indeed, courageous stands that I hope are the hallmark of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Vermont. As the Dean of the College, it is my duty, honor and great joy to try to provide an environment as supportive of the goals I've just outlined as possible, an environment in which faculty members can do their very best scholarship and teaching at the same time that they enjoy rewarding personal and family lives, an environment in which students are challenged to do their best academic work at the same time that they delight in the extracurricular and service opportunities that UVM and Vermont have to offer and develop deep and meaningful friendships that last a lifetime.
