Each year over 2,000 students, working both in on-campus positions and off-campus non-profit organizations, earn in excess of $2,000,000. UVM offers over 3,500 jobs to students who are eligible to receive this money. Students who work are more likely to earn a degree. Studies have found that part-time work during college is a significant factor in post-secondary career choice and success. Please let us help you to secure a position and to get paid.
Eligibility
Three simple steps to find out if you're eligible for Federal Work-Study:
Access your student account: If you qualify for a Federal Work-Study award you will have "Federal Work-Study" listed in your award notice.
What if you don't qualify but still need a job? Consider a part-time job. It's valuable "real world" work experience.
Find a job
Although UVM designates over 3,000 positions for the Federal Work-Study Program, we do not assign students to positions — students must secure their own.
But never fear! There are usually more jobs than there are students to fill them.
To secure your position
Identify positions that interest you in Catamount Job Link, our database of Federal Work-Study jobs.
Contact the department/agency you are interested in working for and arrange an interview. Take your Federal Work-Study Authorization Form to the interview. (Authorization forms are found in your Student Account).
Once hired, complete the Authorization Form with your supervisor.
Students who are new to UVM or who have not worked for UVM in last 12 months will also complete an I-9, a W-4, a VT W-4, and UVM's direct deposit request form. Students without the proper forms of identification for the I-9 will not be permitted to begin work. See necessary forms section below.
All wages are taxable earnings. Please be certain that the I-9, W-4, and VT W-4 are on file with the UVM's Payroll Office before commencing work. Along with your Federal Work-Study Authorization Form, these forms are submitted to Career Services. You may download all of these forms in the "necessary forms " section below.
Timesheets
Students are paid on a bi-weekly schedule (see Payroll Office). The only way to receive a paycheck is to submit your hours on UVM's payroll program, PeopleSoft. Use your UVM netid and password that you would use for your e-mail to login to this system. Submit your hours and your supervisor will approve your hours. Hours need to be submitted on Monday by 12 p.m. of the student payroll week. Learn how to submit your time in PeopleSoft (PDF).
Paychecks
Student checks are mailed to your Federal Work-Study job site or to your local address. If you would like your paycheck mailed to another address please contact UVM's Payroll Office to let them know. If you are interested in direct deposit, please see the "necessary forms " section below. Payday occurs every other Friday for students with Federal Work-Study funding.
Authorization Form: You will need to log in to your student account to download this form. If you are not eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program you will not have this form in your account.
Certificate of Completion (Adobe Flash Reader required): You will need to complete this orientation at an 80% or greater success rate. Be sure you are connected to printer as you will need to print this form.
Deferment Request Form: Required by October 1 in order to defer your Work-Study award for the Spring semester.
Federal Work-Study Student Orientation
All students are required to complete the Federal Work-Study Student Orientation. You will not be able to start working without completing this training.
Federal Work-Study FAQs for students
What is the deadline to submit my hours? Every Monday at noon, no exceptions.
I have logged all of my hours, but haven't been paid. What's happening? Be sure that your supervisor has approved your hours. Some may lose track of the pay period schedule. Also, your paycheck could be at UVM's Payroll office. If you did not fill out the I-9, W-4, or VT W-4 form appropriately, then UVM Payroll will withhold your check until you have completed these forms correctly.
I received a notice that my Federal Work-Study award has been revised. What does that mean? This means that your financial picture looks different to Student Financial Services than when you were originally awarded your Federal Work-Study award. Be sure that you submitted your Federal Work-Study Authorization Form by the published deadline date or your award could be cancelled.
Can I earn my entire award in the fall semester? No, you cannot.
