UVM’s programs in life, health, and biomedical sciences have produced major breakthroughs in our understanding and treatment of cancers, heart disease, substance abuse, obesity, and other afflictions. Our small size helps make such breakthroughs possible because it encourages a stimulating collegiality that crosses disciplines and even programs, from the College of Medicine to Nursing and Health Sciences, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Education and Social Services. The result is education that achieves an uncommon integration of research-based knowledge with a teaching and learning perspective that encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease as well as nutrition, patient care, and service delivery—the full spectrum of human health concerns. At a time when the unriddling of the human genome and advances in molecular biology promise to revolutionize medicine, the University plans to devote even more resources to these areas, with particular emphasis on building its capacity for world-class biomedical research.
