10.01.04 CAMPAIGN PASSES HALFWAY MARK AT 65% OF GOAL
The Campaign for the University of Vermont has raised 65 percent of its $250 million goal just past the halfway point in its six-year timeline. The total stood at $163,474,187 as of August 27, 2004, with three years remaining in the most ambitious fund raising effort in UVM history. Student support in the form of undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships is the top campaign priority, with $46,572,472 of a $105 million goal in that category raised, or 44 percent. Faculty support is the second priority and has already surpassed its $90 million goal for teaching and research. "We have had some remarkable early success in securing several landmark investments to advance the University, and last year we added over sixty million dollars to the campaign total. This is a new high water mark for UVM, but there's a lot more work to do over the next three years," said Ian W. deGroot, vice president for development and alumni relations. "Our success over the long haul is going to depend on the broadest possible participation from alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff. Every gift is important." Campaign Co-chairs Meghan '91 and Rob Cioffi '90, Joan and Eugene Kalkin '50, and Bruce M. Lisman '69 have provided the volunteer leadership that has kept the effort moving forward. "The Campaign has had remarkable success and very powerful momentum," said Lisman. "I think that is a true reflection of what is happening at the University. This is a precious moment for our University." "Timing is everything in life," commented the Kalkins. "Our president and faculty have positioned the University on a path of excellence. Now is the time for all of us to invest in a winning venture." Rob Cioffi said he is gratified by the Campaign's forward momentum and that an emphasis on securing gifts for student support and facilities will be critical to bring the Campaign to a successful conclusion. This is only the second major fundraising campaign undertaken by the University of Vermont. The first campaign, launched in 1989 with a $100 million goal, concluded in 1993 having raised $108 million toward endowment, programs, and facilities. |
