08.03.05 ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELD AT ARCHIE POST COMPLEX
Somewhere, Archie Post is smiling. The athletic fields that bear the name of UVM's star student-athlete of the Class of 1927 and veteran track coach are slated for a major upgrade, and work on the first phase of construction — installation of a state-of-the-art artificial turf field for field hockey and lacrosse — is almost finished. Thanks to a generous gift from Reynolds E. Moulton, Jr., and Betsy Winder of Manchester, Massachusetts, these two sports will host visiting teams on a home field they can be proud of. Winder is the mother of first-year student Stirling Auchindoss Winder '08, who is on the varsity field hockey team. "When Stirling decided to go to UVM, we heard about the plans for a new artificial turf field and decided we wanted to help," Moulton said. "It was the perfect opportunity to do something for the University and for the field hockey team." Moulton founded a successful insurance business in the 1970s, and he and Winder have been generous benefactors to a number of educational institutions over the years including, now, the University of Vermont. "I do it because it makes me feel good," he says. Winder was a standout in field hockey during her student years at Lehigh University and has remained passionate about the sport ever since. "I was surprised when I realized that UVM didn't really have a good home field for field hockey," she says. "You have to have a proper facility if you want to attract and retain the best athletes." In addition to the artificial turf field, planned improvements to the Archie Post athletics complex include construction of an open-air, outdoor athletic stadium for soccer; an outdoor track; permanent seating for 4,000 spectators; and space for concessions, picnicking, and restrooms.
