5.14.07 UNION MUTUAL SUPPORTS HACKETT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
In 1998, the directors of Banknorth Group, Inc., honored Fred '55 and Sally Hackett '56 by endowing the Fred and Sally Hackett Scholarship Fund, which lends financial support to Vermonters attending the University of Vermont's School of Business Administration or College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who have demonstrated their commitment to community service. So when Vermont Regional Campaign Committee member Tod Austin '79 volunteered to talk with Union Mutual of Vermont about a Campaign contribution, he knew right where to go. Austin is president of Hackett, Valine & MacDonald, the insurance firm that Fred Hackett founded decades ago and one of Union Mutual's top agencies. And Union Mutual's president and chief executive officer, Douglas Wacek, is a longtime friend and business associate of the Hacketts. Wouldn't a Campaign gift to the Fred and Sally Hackett Scholarship Fund be a fitting way to participate in UVM's Vermont Regional Campaign and honor the Hackett's at the same time, Austin reasoned? "The response was immediate and very generous — a $10,000 contribution from Union Mutual," Austin says. "Ultimately it is outstanding Vermont students who benefit from a gift like this."
