08.04.04 VERMONT BUSINESS NETWORKING LUNCHEON SERIES A "WHO'S WHO" OF BUSINESS LEADERS

A "Who's Who" of the Chittenden County business community turned out to hear remarks by President Daniel Mark Fogel and IDX co-founder and chairman Richard Tarrant at the inaugural Vermont Business Networking Luncheon on Wednesday, June 16.

President Fogel brought the group up to date on the status of major UVM initiatives, including The Campaign for the University of Vermont, which he said is helping UVM to achieve its ambition "to compete with the best and to rank with the best, regionally and nationally, in the classroom, in the laboratory, and on the playing field."

Tarrant, a standout basketball player for St. Michael's College during his student days, drew a parallel between athletics and business. He said he never would have had the kind of success he's had in business had he not had the good sense to abandon his dream of being a professional athlete. "Sometimes quitting is a good thing," he said. "You're lucky in business if sixty percent of your decisions are right. The key is to quit on the other forty percent."

Tarrant traced the growth of IDX from an entrepreneurial venture started with $12,500 in personal assets to an international healthcare information technology leader with a half billion dollars in annual revenues. And he made it sound easy. "Business is the easiest profession to succeed at with no training and no experience," he said. "It's all common sense."

The well-attended event provided an opportunity to network with other UVMers in the Burlington area. Vermont Regional Board members Barry N. Stone '56 (chair) and Rindy Keyser '81 handled planning and logistics.
