10.18.04 GREENTOWN TO BEANTOWN: THE BEST OF BURLINGTON IN BOSTON
Bring Burlington to Boston? It sounds at least as daunting as, say, the Red Sox winning the World Series. But a creative group of Boston-area alums did just that on Saturday evening, October 16, for a "Greentown to Beantown" roadtrip bringing Burlington's best to the home of Jim '83 and Kristen Atwood in Dedham, transformed for the evening into a very reasonable facsimile of the beloved Queen City. UVM and Burlington icons were everywhere — faithfully reproduced signage for old faithfuls like Nectar's, Ben & Jerry's, and Sweetwaters; a life-sized cutout of "The Hot Dog Lady"; even the actual colossal-sized rooster that used to welcome patrons to the legendary Chickenbone Café on King Street. About 250 alums and spouses attended. It was all in the spirit of reconnecting with UVM and building the network of UVM supporters in the greater Boston area. Host Jim Atwood also had another motive — raising at least $300,000 for The Campaign for the University of Vermont. That effort is still in the early innings, but if the Red Sox analogy holds, it's not too early to begin planning the victory celebration.
