02.02.04 FLEMING MUSEUM HOSTS ALUMNI & FRIENDS IN CELEBRATION OF REMBRANDT EXHIBIT
During the fall of 2003, UVM’s Robert Hull Fleming Museum was the exclusive North American venue for the exhibition, “Rembrandt and the Art of Etching,” the largest showing of Rembrandt’s prints outside the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam. The collection featured 85 of Rembrandt’s most notable prints representing his self-portraits, biblical subjects, everyday scenes, and landscapes, as well as 30 prints by Rembrandt’s predecessors and followers, illustrating his influence on other artists. In conjunction with this special exhibit, President Daniel Mark Fogel and Rachel Kahn-Fogel hosted a celebratory evening at the Fleming in December for nearly 300 alumni, parents, and friends of the University and the Fleming. Guests enjoyed dinner and an exclusive tour of the exhibit led by Fleming Director Janie Cohen, an expert on Rembrandt’s work on paper as it relates to the work of Picasso. UVM theatre department students in 17th century costumes and classical music from the period set the mood for a festive gathering. Highlighting the evening was an insightful lecture by Dr. Nancy Bialler, senior vice president in the Old Master Paintings, Drawings, and Prints department at Sotheby’s. A world-renowned expert on Rembrandt, Dr. Bialler spoke about the significance of Rembrandt’s work on paper and stressed the importance of including these available and affordable works in university museum collections.
