Our magnificent natural setting makes the University of Vermont a living laboratory for environmental research, and we are well on our way to becoming the nation’s premier environmental university.

Robust programs in areas such as freshwater and lake ecology, sustainable agriculture and forestry, and environmental toxicology span the campus, from Agriculture and Life Sciences, Natural Resources, Engineering, Education, and Business to Arts and Sciences and the College of Medicine.

These have now been joined and enhanced by the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, made possible by the Gund family’s generous leadership gift of $7.5 million. This puts the University of Vermont in the forefront of research on the balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Because of our leadership position, the renovation of the world is no mere metaphor for the University of Vermont. Our scientists, scholars, students, and alumni have taken the front lines in the battle for a sustainable planet. Belief in the vision of environmental sustainability that has become the hallmark of UVM inspired another great leadership gift, the Rubenstein family’s $15 million investment in UVM’s School of Natural Resources, which ensures, together with the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory on the shores of Lake Champlain, that the Rubenstein name will forever signify UVM’s preeminence in environmental sciences and studies.
