For Informational Presentation & Group Critical Analysis Labs Monday Oct 11 - Friday Oct 15!

How's everything going?   How were labs?   Enough Chairs?  Cameras work?   Uploading Questions? 

What parts of presenting do students need to work on most?

 Give Students time in lab to work on Group Critical Analysis Presentation.  Udate the lab schedules & Role

Collect Reflection Folders from those students who gave an Informational Presentation the previous week.  Return Graded Dramatic Reading Critique Sheets the week following the presentation!  Return (CALS 001 Library Workbooks) Informational Presentation Reflection folders the week after they are turned in.

When getting the Camera, please arrive at the media center about 15 minutes before your lab starts (but no sooner, see handout of labs scheduled during the week).

Review and critique a couple Group Presentations (handouts: Self/Group Critique, Presentation Critique).

Who needs help creating the LAB TEAMS lists?  Use Morrill Computer Lab.

CALS 001 TAs,  please photocopy an example of one Good and one Poor Library Workbook.  Use the photocopier 208 Morrill, copy code 9297

Mid-Term Warning time:  Any student performing at a C level or lower, please email me their names.  Thanks.

 BEFORE your next LAB:

-Update the Speaking and Lab Roles Schedules for the semester: generally 8-9 speakers max per lab and Post on web.

-Use Grading Templates:

-Email your students (001 use Blackboard) who will be giving an  Informational Presentation the week of Oct 11-15 and remind them to be prepared.

-001 TAs Check your lab Forum discussions on Blackboard.  Answer students so they know you are reading their entries.


Bring to lab:

-Your laptop!

-Cameras from BH-Library Media center.  Get Camera pack (two flip cameras, & inside battery pack)  bring your UVM ID when you pick up the camera from the Media Center in BH Library.

-Four extra AA batteries as backup for the cameras.

-Names Tents and materials for new ones: cards, pens

-Informational Presentation Critique Sheets and pencil with eraser

-Graded Dramatic Reading Critiques, Graded Reflection Folders and student comments

-Timing Sheets

-Stop watch or something to keep time.

-"Master of Ceremonies Checklist"

-"hat" with all students names on slips of paper

-Lab Roles sheet with who is doing what when (print from web)

-Speech schedule sheets of who is speaking when (print from web)

-Attendance sheet for attendance taker
-Extra Student "Critique of Presentation" Templates (one per student)


Go to lab early:
-Leave enough time to get cameras, & set up laptop, name tents, critique sheets, checklists, etc. 


The Lab itself:


Hand out Student Name Tents, make new ones if necessary.


Return Graded Dramatic Readings (CALS 001 Library Workbooks) with student comments/critiques.

CALS 001 TAs collect Library Workbooks from Info Presentation speakers.

Collect Reflection Folders from students who gave their Informational Presentations last week.


Show, Go over, and Explain the Reflection Folder and Contents with your students.  This is due at the beginning of lab the week after the Informational Presentation.  If late -10% first week, -20% following week, any later NO CREDIT (big fat zero!).


Display and go over Speaking Schedule and Lab Roles Schedule (use document camera or computer projected, or hand out).  


Ask if anyone needs Student Critique templates.  Students don’t write on these, they use them as templates for the sheets they write on.


Have Master of Ceremonies write the speakers on the board, along with

            their reading choice, and choose first speaker from the “hat”.

Go over the Master of Ceremonies tasks with them (make sure speaker ready, timer ready, camera ready, introduce each speaker, facilitate questions at the end, have speaker choose next person from hat, wait until all critique forms are back to speaker before introducing next speaker).

Give Timer the timing sheets.

Give Attendance taker the attendance sheet & have them take attendance.

Make sure the critique forms manager is ready.  After presentations give critiques to TAs.

Make sure the students' have given their flash thumb drive to the TA with the laptop


Critique the dramatic readings first, then go on to Informational Presentations (TAs should sit apart from each other and use pencil).

Informational Presentation critiques GO TO THE STUDENT, NOT THE TAS!


Flip Camera Instructions

When first speaker is finished, camera goes to TA with laptop.  TA transfers and names the file (JaneSmith14SeptDramaticReading) from the camera to the laptop.  Copy the file from the laptop to the students' thumb-drive, safely eject the thumb drive and give it to the student. Erase the video from the camera before recording another presentation.



Remind students who are speaking next week, and who is doing what lab role next week. 


Remind students who did their dramatic reading they will get their grade and the critiques from their peers, next week.

Remind students who did their Informational Presentation that their pocket reflection folder is due AT THE BEGINNING OF LAB next week (if late -10%, more than one week late -20%, more than two weeks late: big fat zero).

Answer any questions.


Collect name tents.


After lab:

-Erase any files from Camera

-Immediately Return Cameras to BH Library

-Meet with lab partner and reach consensus on the grade for each dramatic reading and Informational Presentations (Library Workbooks) & Reflection Folders.  Staple dramatic reading student critiques to dramatic reading critique sheet.

-CALS 001 TAs grade Library workbooks (to be returned to the students the following week).

-Upload the video files from the lab that day from the laptop to your public_html directory on zoo.  Make Links to those talks (see Kendra & Mike's example:

-Delete the links and the video files on your public_html from two weeks before, so there are only two weeks worth of videos in your public_html at any one time (we're going to get into trouble if we don't do this).

-Let Dr. L know if there are any videos he should watch/save.

-Erase videos from your laptop

-Record attendance and grades on excel template and save it in at least three different places.

-Email via Blackboard your students who will be giving an informational presentation the following week (8-9 students per lab) to remind them to be prepared.

-Update the Speaking and Role Schedules on the web: 8-9 speakers max per lab.  Upload edited schedules and replace old files in your public_html. 

-Read examples of Poor/Good/Excellent Reflection Papers, and Excellent Outside Speech Critique:  .

-Outside Speech Critiques will be due the week of Oct 18-22.
