Faculty Student Recruitment

collection of photos from the farm, class and hands-on field workAn important part of the mission of the CALS Student Service Office is the recruiting and retention of students in the College. Many of the recruiting activities are coordinated through the Admission’s Office and include scheduled events. A sample of the many recruiting events on campus include:

  • ALANA Visitation Days
  • Phonathons *
  • Admitted Student Visitation Days (ASVD) *
  • Orientation *
  • Open Houses *

* department and program participation dependent

In addition, prospective students are visiting campus daily throughout the year. They generally organize their visit with Admissions to schedule a campus tour with the UVM Advocats. Many visitors request an appointment with a faculty member in the area of the student’s discipline area of interest. As a College we emphasize our quality of advising and student/faculty interaction opportunities. This is where our faculty shine!

Most departments or program directors will have a contact staff person who will ask a faculty member to meet with the prospective student and parents as the need arise. Please do your part to personally meet with prospective students when possible. If there is room in the current class you are teaching, let Admissions and the department know that you can accommodate visitors to the class. A web address to an on-line syllabus could give prospective students an idea of the topic being covered the day they wish to visit.

Visitors to the UVM campus remark on the warm, friendly welcome they receive. Our faculty and staff contribute to that environment year round. Faculty support is one of the main reasons that our CALS’ retention rate is above the University average which is already at a national high for small public universities. Faculty advising coupled with many student/faculty interaction opportunities help students in CALS excel.
