Spanish 1-52

Spanish 1: This four credit course is taught in both the fall and the spring semesters. The class meets four times/wk. and there is an additional required laboratory session of one hr./wk. The most important grammatical structures covered include forms of the present, preterite, and imperfect tenses as well as direct object, indirect object and reflexive pronouns. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required but students should have previously studied at least two yrs. of foreign language in high school.

Spanish 2: This is a continuation of Spanish 1. It is a four credit course which meets four times/wk. with an additional one hr./wk. laboratory requirement taught during both fall and spring semesters. The above listed structures from Sp.1 are reviewed during the first three days of class; and the remaining basic structures of Spanish grammar are taught. Prerequisite is either Sp. 1 or high school Spanish equivalent to Sp. 1.

Spanish 51: This is a three credit course at the intermediate level. It consits of a variety of readings which (whether factual or literary) are used as a basis for class discussion in Spanish. There is an emphasis on student oral participation. Students also write compositions and some grammatical structures are reviewed. Prerequisite is Sp. 2 or an equivalent level of Spanish from high school.

Spanish 52: The emphasis in this three credit intermediate course is on reading modern Spanish in works of literature. Oral work, compositions and some grammar review are also components of this course. Prerequisite is Sp. 51 or an equivalent level of high school Spanish.

There is a ten day add/drop period at the beginning of each semester when a student can change course level (providing space exists in the class he/she wishes to enter). Once the student has entered this sequence of courses he/she will not be permitted to skip ahead or receive credit for going back without approval of the chair of the department.
