WRITING A SYNOPSIS OF A JOURNAL ARTICLE
Each week students will be asked to hand in a one-page synopsis
for
each journal article assigned for discussion in that week.
The
synopsis will help you organize your thoughts and questions on the
reading
and will demonstrate to me that you are keeping up with the
reading.
The guidelines below should be used to organize your synopsis into
three
parts.
- Major points. Make a list of three or four major
points communicated
by the authors of this paper. What are the key findings?
What
is the significance of this work?.
- Questions. List two or three questions that you
have
as a
result of reading this paper. Be specific – it’s not acceptable
to
say, “I didn’t understand the entire paper.”
- Response. Respond to the question(s) posted to the
discussion list.
- You must type your synopses
- Hand in one 1-page synopsis per article
- The synopses are due during class on the day the article is
discussed --
late assignments will not be graded
