Tiger Beetles of Vermont

Cicindela ancocisconensis,White Mt. Tiger Beetle. Habitat: Shaded gravel & sandbanks on mt. brooks & small rivers with large boulders. Recorded only from two sites in central & southern VT. but probably widespread in mts.

Cicindela duodecimguttata,12 spotted Tiger Beetle

Habitat:Near ponds, streams on mud, sand or fine gravel. Associated with repanda but found on verticle banks on higher,shadier, drier ground. Common species.

Cicindela formosa generosa,Big Sand Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Dry upland sandy areas, sand pits, blowouts, dry forest clearings, edges of sand dunes. Moderately common.

Cicindela hirticollis hirticollis, Hairy-necked Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Sandy beaches next to large bodies of fresh or salt water. Wet habitat species. Recorded only from Northwestern VT. on shores of Lake Champlain.

Cicindela limbalis, Clay Bank Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Bare sloping clay soil, as in abandoned hill farms & roadcuts. Recorded only from hilly regions in northern part of Vt. Probably general except for the Champlain Valley.

Cicindela longilabris longilabris Long-lip Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Northern species near bogs on sand or fine gravel, bare rock ledges, near coniferous forest. Associated with Jack Pine, blueberry,reindeer moss. In Vt. recorded only from 2 north central areas.

Cicindela marginipennis, Cobblestone Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Restricted to cobblestone islands and deltas in large rivers. In Vt. known only from the Connecticut, Winooski and White rivers.

Cicindela patruela patruela,Patterned Green Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Sand with Jack Pine, sweet fern, blueberry. Recorded only once in the 19 th century from Burlington.

Cicindela punctulata punctulata, Punctured Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Bare, hard-packed soil, especially on cultivated land, city sidewalks, gardens, plowed fields. Broader range than any other tiger beetle, widespread.

Cicindela puritana,Puritan Tiger Beetle

Habitat:Sand deposits along big rivers. Recorded once from Hartland,VT. along Connecticut River.

Cicindela purpurea purpurea, Cow Path Tiger Beetle

Habitat: BARE level clay soil, upland species not near water, sparsely vegetated meadows, roadsides. Recorded throughout VT.

Cicindela repanda repanda, Common Shore Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Most abundant near water, ponds, river edges. Also can be found distant from water near sand pits. One of the most common species, widespread in Vt.

Cicindela rufiventris rufiventris,Red-bellied Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Eroded road cuts, embankments of clay & gravel soil near forest edges, rock ledges. In VT. found only in southwestern region of state.

Cicindela scutellaris lecontei, Smooth Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Dry habitat species, on bare loose sand of dunes, roadcuts & sand pits. Often with formosa generosa. widespread in Vt.

Cicindela sexguttata,Six-spotted Tiger Beetle

Habitat: gardens, forest edges & clearing, along forest trails.Very common throughout VT.

Cincindela tranquebarica tranquebarica, Oblique-lined Tiger Beetle

Habitat: Varied habitats on clay, sand ,sandpits & dunes. Mostly associated with other species. General throughout Vt.
