Research

I study a unique system of hybridizing harvester ants that are found in the southwestern United States. There unique ants show a genetic caste determination system that prevents ants from differentiating into castes based on environmental cues. Instead, castes are determined by the lineage of each individual ant. This creates very strong optimal fitness differences between males and females in this system, leading to sexual conflict. I am interested in how this sexual conflict has allowed for adaptations to evolve in males and females that optimize an individual's fitness at the expense of their mate.
