Related Programs
Because life science programs are housed in several other administrative units on campus, graduate students often interact with colleagues outside Biology. Graduate degree programs are offered in several departments in Medicine, Agriculture & Life Sciences, and Natural Resources. These programs, with their faculty, courses and seminars, provide a wealth of opportunities for our students as well. Review the graduate programs within the Department of Biology.
Cell and Molecular Biology
The Cell and Molecular Biology Program leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees is an interdisciplinary program offered under the direction of a committee composed of faculty members in participating departments, including six in Biology. Our graduate students are able to take advantage of courses, seminars, and research expertise provided by this program.
Department of Plant Biology
The Department of Plant Biology has its own M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Many facilities are shared with the Department of Biology, and interactions between the two are particularly well-developed. We cooperate with Plant Biology in curriculum development, and other mutual endeavors.
Field Naturalist Program
The Department of Plant Biology at UVM offers a non-thesis option leading to a Field Naturalist M.S. degree. The objective is to educate students in a broad range of natural science disciplines to develop a generalized view of the environment.
W. Alton Jones Cell Science Center
The W. Alton Jones Cell Science Center is an independent research institution with 11 faculty located about 2 hours from Burlington in Lake Placid, New York. Research interests there focus on in vitro culture of mammalian cell lines, growth factor research, and other special areas related to cell growth, differentiation, and cancer biology. Six W. Alton Jones faculty hold adjunct appointments in Biology.
Applied Mathematics Program
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UVM offers a specialty in applied mathematics. Mathematical modeling is integral to modern biological research. Faculty and graduate students in Biology take advantage of courses, seminars, and the research expertise provided by this program.
Vermont Comprehensive Cancer Center
The Medical Center Hospital of Vermont and UVM are the site of a comprehensive cancer center, which is a coalition of clinicians, basic researchers, and research facilities for the study of cancer. Judith Van Houten, Biology Professor, is a member of this center and has access to the facilities for her research.Vermont Cancer Center website
