Kente is a traditional cloth of Ghana. Primarily used to denote clan or tribe during sacred rituals the kente stole was adopted by American university students as a way of demonstrating pride in their african ancestry. This quickly spread to other minority groups with latinos and asians adopting the Kente stole with their own cultural and ethnic iconography during graduation ceremonies nationwide. Most recently the LGBTQA community has adapted this practice by wearing rainbow stoles to their graduation ceremonies. |
