Fall American Sign Langauge Courses at the University of Vermont

Fall ASL Courses 

The following courses are usually offered every Fall under the Department of Communication Sciences at the University of Vermont:

CMSI 001: American Sign Language I  (4 credits)

Prerequisite: none.

CMSI 002: American Sign Language II  (4 credits)

Prerequisite: ASL I or successful completion of placement interview.

CMSI 051: American Sign Language III  (3 credits)

Prerequisite: ASL II or successful completion of placement interview.

CMSI 195: American Sign Language V  (3 credits)

Prerequisite: ASL IV or successful completion of placement interview.

The above courses covers the fundamentals of expression and understanding of American Sign Language, including grammar, facial markers, body classifiers, vocabulary, and fingerspelling. Elements of Deaf Culture are also explored. Students will acquire a functional understanding of American Sign Language and the culture of native users of this language. These courses fulfill the Arts & Sciences foreign language distribution requirement.
