Training Information:
The University
of Vermont
Aikido Club trains weekly at the Aikido of Champlain Valley Dojo.
The class is taught in a traditional Japanese dojo setting by Aikido of
Champlain Valley Chief Instructor, Benjamin Pincus, 5th Dan (5th degree
black belt) Shidoin (certified instructor). For
more information about Pincus Sensei click here.
Training in Aikido requires the purchase of a keikogi (martial arts
training uniform), which can be purchased through Aikido of Champlain
Valley. Students that are interested in learning more about
Aikido are encouraged to visit a class and watch.
Aikido practice
consists of a number of diverse
exercises including: kokyu waza (breathing exercises), zazen (seated
meditation), ukemi (the art of receiving or falling), and the practice
of reishiki (Japanese etiquette). The
practice of reishiki within a dojo includes
bowing, which helps to create an atmosphere of respect and gratitude
among those practicing. Techniques
are practiced in both
suwari waza (seated technique) and from several hamni (standing
positions). Aikido practice can range from meditative stillness
to
vigorous motion very quickly. Both
zazen and suwari waza are conducted from seiza (Japanese formal
kneeling position).
