Lab 2, CALS 85, Fall 2011 (Thurs 8 Sept)
For labs 13-16 Sept

BEFORE LAB:
-    Go over the “Power Point Presentation Critique” sheet
-    Log in to Blackboard and check, and reply
-    Bring to lab name tent materials, pens, your lab notebook, and class list.
-    Bring student comment templates (enough for each student).
-    Bring to lab PowerPoint Presentation Critique sheets (enough for each TA to evaluate each student).
-    Bring a “hat” and have all students’ names in it on slips of paper
-    Bring  TIMING SHEETS.

-    Bring a stapler.
-    Use Pine for email to practice for the lab in a couple weeks.

THE LAB:

1.    Go Early.
2.    Hand out name tents and have students make name tents if they don’t have one.
3.    Take Attendance.  Record who is there, who is absent, who comes in late (or leaves early).
4.    Ask if there are any problems logging into Blackboard and doing the journals.  Please contact Dr. L if students can’t get in or need to be added or moved to another lab.  Remind students 1 journal per week on technology (websites that they find useful, IT tips, etc).
5.    Remind students to bring data stick / thumb drive to lab next week.
6.    Draw student name out of “hat”, or ask “Who would like to go first?” for first presentation, then when speaker is finished, they choose the next speaker out of the hat, or ask who’s next.
7.    Pass out student critique templates and have audience students make feedback forms from the template sheets.
8.    Assign a TIMER, presentations should be 4-5 minutes.  Give them theTIMING sheets.
9.    Assign a Critique Forms Manager to collect and give you the student critique forms.
10.    Turn monitor so student presenters can see, test remote mouse if available.
11.    Remind students: Look the audience, not the screen, no hats, no gum chewing, don’t say “That’s about it” at the end, instead say “thank you”.
12.    Before speaker starts, ask “Is the Timer Ready?, is everyone ready to write feedback?”.  Then introduce the speaker.
13.    Use the PowerPoint critique form.  Use pencil.  Sit away from your fellow TA, and then after lab agree on grading.
14.    When speakers are finished, applaud.  Then ask if there are any questions for speaker.  Then ask who would like to go next or have speaker choose next person, while Critique Forms Manager collects the student feedback forms.
15.    Any absences without prior notice: zero.  If sick or accident no late penalty.  If “not ready” but in lab, -10%.   If images don’t work and they want to go next week -10%.  If still not ready next week, -20%.  If still not ready 2-weeks out: Zero.
16.    Make sure students know they may contact you and meet with you outside of lab if necessary to get extra help with the lab or if they want your advice.
17.    Collect Name Tents at end of lab (so you can hand them out at the beginning of next lab).

AFTER THE LAB:
•    Record absences (note the date) and comments on spreadsheet template.
•    Meet with your TA partner and look over the student comments and your own PowerPoint Critique sheets.  Make sure both of your critiques are close in agreement.  Assign a grade for the student’s presentation out of 50 points.  Record grade in spreadsheet.  Write on top sheet: “Good work studentname, 84%, 42/50”
•    Save the spreadsheet in three places: on your PC, data stick, and upload to your zoo account.
•    Contact Dr. L if students are missing or having trouble with Blackboard (in wrong lab, can’t log in, etc.).
