A final note from ACCESS

Welcome Back!

ACCESS would like to welcome you back to UVM. We hope you enjoyed your summer and that you are ready for the fall semester ahead!

This newsletter provides important information and reminders about how to obtain services, get ACCESS updates, be aware of opportunities, rights and responsibilities, deadlines, etc.

Fall Open House

ACCESS invites you and your parents to stop by on Friday, August 28, anytime from 1-4 PM. Take a pause from unpacking. Stop by: for a cold drink, to meet your ACCESS Specialist, set up an initial appointment, get questions answered, etc. We hope to see you at the Open House!

Keep Informed – Read your email and visit www.uvm.edu/access

To keep students up to date on what’s happening at ACCESS, we send information via email. It is important for you to read your email from ACCESS since there are often procedural reminders and deadlines in our communications.

In order to keep in touch, ACCESS uses our email listserv as well as a new feature on our recently updated website. This new feature enables students to view emails that were recently sent via our listserv on our website as well. Now you have an additional way to be reminded of important information. The recently sent emails can be found on the ACCESS main page.

ACCESS Fall 2009 Changes

Based on your feedback in the Annual ACCESS Survey this past spring, we are instituting several changes this fall. We asked for your input and now we are giving you what you asked for!

Exam Proctoring Center (EPC):

  • Starting Fall 2009, the EPC will offer evening hours for exam proctoring.  The new Hours will be Mon-Thurs: 8 am— 8 pm,  Fri: 8am —- 4 pm.
  • In addition, ALL exams will now be scheduled on-line!  Go to:  EPC website to sign-up or email epc@uvm.edu.
  • Also new this year in the EPC, students should plan to bring a photo ID (driver's license, student ID) when you come to take your exam.
  • “Hey—it’s LOUD when I take an exam at the EPC.. Why don’t you fix THAT?” Thanks for the suggestion! We did—starting this Fall, the EPC will be offering noise-cancelling earphones when you take your exams!

Notetaking:

  • If a student receives notetaking as an accommodation, the student will now request notes on-line, per class  — AFTER they have met with their ACCESS specialist.  Please note:  students will still need to present  letter to their professor(s)
  • Notetaking website:  Notetaking website and click on “Notetaking Request.”
  • ACCESS notetaking staff will be back in touch with students regarding next step.
  • Any questions, notes@uvm.edu

 Volunteer Notetakers:

  • Back by popular demand is CyberCa$h - $$ earned weekly by volunteer notetakers for submitting notes in a TIMELY manner. CyberCa$h can be used at the CyberCafe in the Bailey Howe Library.
  • Volunteer notetakers also sign up online.
  • This year will also include a link so volunteers can see other classes needing notetakers.
  • Volunteer notetakers will also be receiving a gift card to the UVM Bookstore at the end of the semester.
  • Any questions, notes@uvm.edu

Other Updates/Changes:

  • Captioning & Interpreter Requests are all online too!
  • For all those new on-line requests, ACCESS now has a courtesy computer in the office for your use!

ACCESS Forms:

  • In an effort to get files current, students visiting ACCESS may be asked to fill out the following forms: ACUA Consent Form, Authorization for Communication with Family Members and Disability Certification Form.
  • Please be ready to spend a few moments reviewing and filling out these forms if you are asked to do so.
  • If you would like assistance with any of the forms or have questions, you can bring them into your meeting with your Specialist.

ACCESS FAQ

Who will know that I’m registered with ACCESS?
You’ll decide that. ACCESS records are kept separate from other student records, and disability information is released only with your consent, to people who need to know it.

Can my parents/guardians contact ACCESS to find out how I’m doing?
It depends. Parents and guardians may be concerned about your progress, and therefore may want to share concerns and/or ask us for information about you. You may wish to have a discussion with them regarding what kind of contact you want them to have, and then discuss this with your ACCESS Specialist. You will need to sign a consent form if you’d like for ACCESS to provide information to your parents or guardians. Information at ACCESS is protected by FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).
