CAPS Consultation Services

In addition to clinical services, Counseling and Psychiatry Services (CAPS) staff consult with University faculty, staff, student leaders, groups, and organizations on ways to improve the UVM environment and experience for students.

Through liaison relationships with campus departments (e.g., Academic Deans, Residential Life, LGBTQA Center, ALANA Student Center, Women's Center, Office of International Education, College of Medicine, Department of Athletics) we address issues of concern to individuals or groups and identify strategies for problem solving, conflict management, and skill development. We welcome collaboration with university groups, resources, and organizations. CAPS staff are also available for consultation regarding campus emergencies or crises, and to assist others in helping students in distress.

Examples of Consultation Programs:

  • Development of "Let's Talk": a regular, drop-in series for Medical Students (on-site, confidential consultation with a CAPS counselor)
  • Crisis Response/Management
  • How to Help a Student in Distress
  • Making a Referral to CAPS
  • Self-Care & Wellness

In addition to on-campus collaboration, CAPS staff seek to maintain positive relationships with community partners, including mental health clinicians and agencies we refer to, and other resources that may be useful for students, faculty/staff we are working with.

To inquire about consultation with CAPS staff, email us at LivingWell@uvm.edu. If you are concerned about a student in distress and would like to consult with a mental health professional, please call 656-3340.
